Tupac Shakur, the US rapper, died at age 25. He was shot in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas on East Flamingo road / Koval lane after attending the Seldon vs. Tyson boxing match at MGM Grand with Death Row records’ boss, Marion Knight. The shooting took place a bit before midnight and four bullets struck Tupac who passed away six days later. The 7th of September is the date of the shooting and the rapper died on the 13th September 1996. He's now been dead for longer than he has been alive.
Today, no sign or memorial is visible on the site of the tragic event but the two posts on the crossing where the musician was shot. The location is a five minute walk East from the Bally’s, Bellagio or Ceasars casinos are located on the Strip. The numerous heartfelt messages, stickers, tags and shout outs left by the fans on the posts are a powerful tribute to the strong legacy of the talented musician whose promising career was abruptly put to a halt.
The unassuming street spot feels inappropriate to many fans and loved ones resulting in more and more voices requesting a proper memorial like reported by Scott Roeben on casino.org in 2021 while closing in on the fatal night’s 25th anniversary.
Personally, I've never really been a fan of the artist's work but his life, what he has achieved in such a short period and the fuzz around his death have drawn my attention at some point. This (blog) post is not supposed to be a claim but considered the amount of ridiculous plaques we put in place to honour (sometimes dubious) random personalities, my opinion, in case anyone cares, is that an inspiring celebrity like Tupac that suffered such a tragic passing, surely deserves a proper memorial. On the other hand, the 'street' aspect of sticking to municipal power posts as a memorial, gives the site a 'true' feel. The added photos in this post are pics of the zone as of July 2022 the last time I was there. Go check it out if you're in the area.
