[ PORTUGAL ] European Poker Masters pics by Alex Rotenberg

The news had been in the air for weeks. First as a rumor since autumn of 2023 until I was actually sitting in a Casino Estoril office last February to officially discuss options to promote the comeback of poker festivals to Estoril.

The European Poker Masters is a new tour created by Francisco Fernandez who is also the brain behind the Vamos Poker Tour that recently stopped in Portugal too, in Troia.

I was intending to travel to both events but tooth problems had another plan for me and I ended up having three different surgeries over April. Luckily, Alex has better teeth than I have and he was happy to take over the responsibility of documenting the return of tournament poker to Estoril after several years of cash games-only action.

Alex Rotenberg has been around in The-Rounder.net community for years and he is based inn nearby Cascais so, when. I found out I would not be able to join the poker festivals with my cameras and a few of my bank notes, he was the obvious candidate to save the day.

Impressions of Alex:

​I had the pleasure of working as the official photographer of the European Poker Masters tournament between 17 - 21 April, 2024 at Casino Estoril, Portugal. For myself and I’m sure others, it's been nostalgic to shoot this tournament since it’s been 5 ½ years since a major poker tournament was hosted back in late-2018.

Overall, the atmosphere was great, albeit more on the serious side probably due to the higher-than-average buy-ins (EUR 2,500 for the Main Event). I would have liked to have captured more emotions from the players but I’m confident that with larger fields with more recreational players this will be easier in forthcoming more affordable tournaments for the average player. The field was international featuring many Spanish, French and German adding to the diversity of play. The Estoril staff were super friendly and professional ensuring everybody felt welcome.

Casino Estoril has again become a premium location for poker enthusiasts and I look forward to shooting more poker tournaments there as well as playing – maybe Damiano will take a picture of me holding a trophy!
